Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

 Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

In early 2019 the concept and developments of 5G – 5 th Generation of wireless technology introduced to the world while being a controversial topic in the world along with its wealthy benefits. Virtual reality, self-driving cars, power and environmental savings, smart cities and internet of things and the development of transport and health care services some of the evolutional benefits of 5G that took the attention of world. For the first time in South Asian region this technology was introduced to Sri Lanka too which was a proud moment for us as a country.

Apart from talking always about the benefits and other technical advancements of this technology it would be better considering the feasibility of implementing this technology in Sri Lanka and what are the challenges and risks ahead of us when empowering Sri Lanka with 5G.

First of all, before proceeding with 5G we should have proper infrastructure facilities for that. Network service providers must establish more base stations all over the country specially in urban areas where the network traffic is very high. Further service providers should bring this technology to the civil society & corporate entities and should offer them knowledge about 5G technology, its benefits and applications to the daily operations of their lives as well as organizations.

Then the compatible devices for the 5G technology must be available in the market to get the experience of 5G. But as we all know there are only few devices in the market which are compatible with 5G such as Samsung S – 10, Apple IPhone 12, Huawei mate – X and etc. Although we could increase the quantity of 5G devices, the customers in the market must have financial affordability for this type of technology because its prices are higher than average. It is natural that as a country with low GDP per capita majority of the citizens could not go align with this latest technology and its high cost. So the local authorities can deduct the taxes and levis that already put on telecommunication sector to encourage service providers to engage largely in the implementation of the technology and reducing the service cost from their side.

When considering the challenges ahead of us we must re – consider about our readiness to this kind of a technology. Because as a developing country, government authorities do not pay high attention on advancing the society with technology while there are more social and economic problems to be solved. So convincing the government about the importance of 5G will be bit challenged. Further it would be bit challenging when implementing these technologies for organizations specially in government sector where traditional thinking people are filled with. Moreover, many countries in the world have recognized that with the introducing and application of 5G, lot of human based activities are replaced with integrated robotics and other automation techniques. Due to that effect there will be high unemployment rate and high poverty in line with that.

As every other technology introduced to the world 5G is also having some risks. First their maybe security breaches on the systems and could damage data on the systems. So internet service providers must aware of these type of security issues & privacy issues. So there must be an updated legal background for the telecommunication sector where people feel safe when using the 5G technology. And also there are some rumors that 5G technology carries some health issues. It is also another fact that should be managed at the initial stage.

So if we can overcome these challenges and manage & minimize the risks around the 5G technology we can make a huge step forward as a developing country while operating the country in a smooth and effective way.
