Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

 Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

The world we live in is evolving day by day with new technologies. Communication plays a huge role in all the work that takes place around the world. So we need to look at how communication technology has evolved so far and what recent technology we can use. There we can see that 5G is the latest trend in the world. What is 5G? Simply put, 5G offers fast data speeds, incredibly low delays, a significant increase in base station performance, and major changes in Quality of Service for customers to existing networks. To enhance the end-user experience with high performance and reliability through 5G, it requires 1000x more capacity, 1ms latency, 10-100x latency, reduce energy consumption, 10-100x data rates etc.

In 2018, South Korea took the first steps to introduce 5G technology to users. Since then, large countries such as the United States, China and Japan, as well as smaller countries such as Turkey, Sweden and Estonia, have taken significant steps to make 5G networks commercially available to their citizens. In 2025, according to a GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communication Association) Intelligence source, global 5G coverage will cover more than 35% of geography and 5G adoptions will be more than 1,400 million. The world is moving like that, where is the communication technology in Sri Lanka? As a small country can it move forward with 5G?

The latest answer is yes it is possible. This is because Sri Lanka Telecom is building and manage a large national fiber network which linked to international cables. It will be 45,000km network and serve as the backbone for fixed broadband and mobile services, including 5G. The government is supporting the development of 5G technology by approving funding from 2018 to expand this new network. With these facilities and services, Dialog Axiata and Mobitel companies have started moving from 4G to 5G. As a big step forward, Mobitel has launched its first 5G mobile phone in 2019 in Sri Lanka. As well as we can see so many other key developments as Dialog Axiata and Mobitel run 5G pre commercial tests, Telecommunication levy is reduced to 11.25% of telecom service revenue, Maldives Sri Lanka Cable (MSC) is commissioned and lit, Fixed broadband penetration still have relatively low but grow up day by day, slowdown in market growing by leading of high mobile penetration, etc.

Sri Lanka is a still developing country with some difficulties such as rural areas which still not so friendly with the new technology, non-educated people of some places, etc. But in Sri Lanka there are so many intelligent human resources as well as hardware, software, services and also service providers. And also it shows a very strong increase in mobile broadband penetration in last 6 years. So Sri Lanka has so many opportunities to developing 5G communication for the citizens by overcome those little problems and empowering the Sri Lanka with 5G. So as the citizen of Sri Lanka it is a responsibility of all of us to support the development of 5G technology in our country
