Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

Empowering Sri Lanka with 5G

The Fifth Version of a Product or System or simply the 5th generation wireless technology introduced to the world. The Smart and Dynamic Network, Combining Computing and Telecommunications. So simply the ‘5G’ term used to describe the Next Generation of Mobile Networks beyond LTE Mobile Networks. And it has been eight years since the 4G or the fourth generation network services were launched in Malaysia.

The potential of this technology to enable organizations to step up their efforts of digital transformation and accelerate the pace of business innovation is huge.

“5G; faster browsing – Richer content – Closer connections”

5G technology will transform every aspect of human life. And will revolutionize the future with its limitless benefits. It will directly affect not only for enable the existing ‘Internet of Things’, but also to introduce millions of new applications.

“Data is the New Oil – 5G is the Pipeline.”

Today in global level, 5G technology helps in the evaluation of new infrastructure. And paves new paths for industry that will lead the future. 75% of industrial organizations believe that, within the next five years, 5G will be a catalyst for their digital transformations.

“To take my mobile gaming experience to a whole next level”

The researchers was predicted that, by 2025, more than 75% of the world’s population will interact with data every day, and even also each connected person will have at least one data interaction for every 18 second. So the 5G technology will be a smarter weapon to them to fulfill their data mission.

A very recent statement in a keynote presentation at Shanghai was proved the immense power of 5G.

“5G – enabled industry could add 8 trillions of dollars to global GDP by 2030. This is a Game – Changer.” – Pekka Lundmark; President and CEO-Nokia

So it will be a wise opportunity and a significant step to Sri Lanka, if the country is empowered by 5G network. A consequential number of Sri Lankan mobile service providers have tested 5G coverage in the country. Huawei has already invested for 5G in Sri Lanka while Dialog Axiata and Mobitel conducted pre-commercial 5G trials specially in the time during 2017-2019. Both Huawei and Ericson have partnered with them for further processes.

The weather patterns of the Sri Lanka is a major concern when implementing 5G coverage within the country.

The ‘National Digital Policy for Sri Lanka 2020-2025’ by Ministry of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology provides some references about current scenario and aspects of 5G coverage in the country. Its report specifies that the current telecommunications law which governs the sector needs to be upgraded to meet the requirements of the emerging 5G system.

Although some domestic telecommunication industrialists highly argue that Sri Lanka should not push to 5G crisis created all over the world, instead of that they assess what we can do with 5G that we cannot do with 4G is essential. According to those professionals, about 98% of Sri Lanka’s e-commerce and e-government tasks can be executed with 4G and 5G is not yet in high demand. But without getting a quick decision this has to be concern and needs to be address with careful analysis by the recent research and data.

Nearly year ago a proud Sri Lankan was expressed his ideas towards 5G.

“5G’s software based networks are easier to hack than 4G’s hard-based systems. Open architecture, no implicit security due to the lack of know-how, failures to introduce proper testing are among the risks that 5G represents. Moreover it will allow a massive up scaling in the ways which we will interface with the internet, including transport, utilities, food and farming, healthcare etc. Nonetheless, 5G also represents opportunities for cyber security because of the central controls and the fact that no expensive resources will be required to coordinate these responses.” – Dr. Madhusanka Liyanage, University College of Dublin, University of Oulu - Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Facilities stated that developing 5G technology alone could account for 10% of Sri Lanka’s entire GDP by 2025. And could generate over at least one million jobs for further years to come, and collectively add 8 billion to 20 billion USD in economic value by 2030 to Sri Lanka’s GDP.

So we should stand together to fulfil the requirements to establish 5G coverage strongly and reduce the bad impacts afterwards. Because in near future it is obvious that 5G technology provide immense advantages while emerging technological environment & ecosystem stability with conductivity for economic, social, environmental and even political prosperity in Sri Lanka.

Let’s Enjoy The Dawn of A New Smarter Generation.
